Birthing Classes at Rob Buist Obstetrics

I am always looking for ways to improve my service so with that view in mind I am pleased to announce that birthing classes will begin at my office in May 2011. I believe this initiative fills what best might be described as a gap in the market.

The educators:

The classes will be provided by me and my colleague, Allison Cummins, a Midwifery Educator. You can read more about Allison in the midwifery part of the services section of my website.

Both Allison and I work currently in clinical practice and could be regarded as experts in our respective fields. Many other childbirth educators don’t actually look after women in labour or deliver babies.

Composition of classes:

Each birthing course will involve three sessions of one to one and a half hours duration. The three sessions will be divided as follows:

  1. What to expect in the last weeks of pregnancy, preparing for birth, introduction to labour, who and when to call, coming to hospital, relaxation strategies, the partner’s role, the stages of labour & strategies to manage uncomplicated labour and birth – facilitated by Allison
  2. Unexpected outcomes including complications of late pregnancy, induction of labour, pain relief options in labour (including epidurals), instrumental birth and caesarean section – facilitated by Allison & Rob.
  3. Your baby’s first few hours of life, breastfeeding, immunisations, transition to parenthood and some postnatal feelings and physical changes – Facilitated by Allison

Tours of the Delivery Units of The Royal Hospital for Women and Prince of Wales Private Hospital will also be conducted.

Each class is limited to eight couples to ensure an intimate environment and an opportunity for everyone to raise any issues and questions they may have. The spots will be allocated on a first in first served basis.

All women and couples are welcome to attend these classes – you do not have to be a patient of mine  to come to these classes.

Timing of classes:

Classes will be conducted on Saturdays 10.30 am – 12 pm over three consecutive weeks.

Location of classes:

The classes will take place at Suite 1701 (level 17), 520 Oxford St Tower One, Bondi Junction. Remember the Westfield shopping centre provides two hours of free parking.

Cost of classes:

Each class will cost $100 per couple (i.e. $300 per couple for the entire course), payable in advance. Fees will apply for cancellations made at short notice.

Booking into classes:

Please contact Melanie Shilbury at my office on 9388 0110 or melanie@robbuist.com

If you can’t come to classes (or don’t want to come to classes):

If you don’t like group classes or our times and location is inconvenient you can contact Allison directly in order to organise individualised classes in the privacy of your own home. You can contact Allison at allisoncummins@bigpond.com .

And watch this space…

Over the next three months we will be announcing a number of one off seminars regarding many other aspects of pregnancy and childbirth, including:

  1. Preparing for pregnancy and diet and exercise in pregnancy
  2. The tests offered during pregnancy, including ultrasound scans and testing for fetal abnormalities
  3. Pregnancy in the over 40’s
  4. Medical complications of pregnancy and high risk pregnancy care
  5. Caesarean childbirth

As always these sessions will be conducted by experts who are currently in active clinical practice in their areas of expertise.
