My name is Rob Buist and I am a specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. I am a graduate of the University of Auckland and I did my specialist training – including specific training in high risk obstetrics – in Auckland and England. I now have over 14 years’ experience as a specialist. Before moving to Sydney in 2003 I was part of the high risk pregnancy service at National Women’s Hospital in Auckland.

I now hold specialist appointments at The Royal Hospital for Women and the Prince of Wales Private Hospital and I am a Conjoint Senior Lecturer in Women’s Health at the University of New South Wales. I have published a number of studies and articles in the scientific literature and I have been extensively involved in the examination of the outcomes of maternity care in both Australia and New Zealand.

I care for women who are experiencing normal pregnancies although I also look after women with medical conditions or complicated pregnancies, including multiples, older mothers and women who have had reproductive problems. I am comfortable with the full range of birthing options from water birth to caesarean childbirth including vaginal birth after a previous caesarean section (VBAC).

My philosophy is that I strive to provide a safe service that:

  • Is of a very high clinical standard,
  • Is available twenty four hours per day,
  • Is attentive to your needs and wishes, and
  • Involves extensive provision of information and discussion of all of your birthing options.

My wife Sue (the reason I moved to Sydney in the first place) is a former physiotherapist who is now a dedicated manager within the New South Wales public health system – so her phone rings at night as often as mine does. I have two grown sons (one of whom has made the dubious decision to study medicine), a stepson and a feisty stepdaughter. We live in Randwick with two cats.

When I am not working I spend time running (I turn 50 in 2011 so I don’t run as far or as fast as I used to), reading, listening to music and watching movies. I am a lifelong fan of The Rolling Stones.
